Pescaviar winner of MSC Most Innovative Product Award 2012

10 May 2012

Pescaviar’s Arënkha Pearls won the award for Most Innovative Product at the first edition of the MSC SeAwards, held during the 20th edition of the European Seafood Exposition in Brussels.

The prize, awarded by the Marine Stewardship Council, is given to MSC-certified products which excel in the use of new ideas or methods, improving an existing category or creating a new one.

Arënkha Pearls is a caviar substitute made using wild herring from an MSC-certified sustainable Norwegian fishery. After mild smoking, sophisticated technology is used to transform the fish into intensely-flavoured spheres, free of artificial preservatives or additives.

The Pescaviar product impressed the MSC jury due to its flavour, texture and innovative use of technology.

Innovation and commitment to sustainable fishing

Almudena Vázquez, Pescaviar Exports Manager, received the award at the Brussels Seafood Festival from Steven Tait, MSC International Manager, and Carlos Montero, from the MSC Spain and Portugal Office. “All of us at Pescaviar are very proud to have been awarded this prize. Pescaviar was one of the first Spanish companies to define a business model based on offering sustainable products, and this award comes as recognition of our hard work. Interest in MSC-certified products continues to grow, and not just in Europe. Our MSC-certified Arënkha is proving extremely popular in Asia and the United States, and we are optimistic for the future” she explained.

MSC SeAwards 2012

At this first edition of the SeAward prizes, the MSC aimed to acknowledge efforts in developing high-quality products using MSC-certified sustainable ingredients.

Over 100 products were considered for the 3 categories. In addition to the Most Innovative Product award granted to Arënkha Pearls, other awards went to McDonald’s Filet-o-Fish (Best New Product) and to Jamie Oliver Pollock Fish Cakes (Most Creative Product).

What the MSC says

Laura Rodríguez, MSC Spain and Portugal Country Manager, explained, “Pescaviar was one of the first Spanish companies to obtain MSC certification, and we are particularly happy for them. The MSC SeAwards acknowledge innovation, quality and a commitment to sustainable fishing. We congratulate Pescaviar and would encourage other Spanish companies to present their products at future editions of the award.”
